This is a deep dive on one piece of the bigger picture. If you haven't read the full Reddit guide yet, start there — this page zooms in on the single thing inside it that quietly decides whether any of your posting works at all.
CQS stands for Contributor Quality Score. It's Reddit's private, internal rating of one thing: does this account behave like a real person who contributes, or like a spammer here to advertise? Reddit never shows you the number. It sits in the background and the levels run roughly from lowest, to low, to moderate, to high, to highest.
Every creator account starts life looking a little suspicious to Reddit — brand new, no history, and about to start posting promotional content. CQS is the system deciding how much benefit of the doubt to give you. Build a real history and it rises. Behave like a bot and it sinks.
CQS isn't a punishment for breaking a rule. It's a running judgement of whether you look real.
Here's the cruel part. When a moderator removes your post, you get a message. When you break a site-wide rule, you get a warning. When your CQS is low, you get nothing. Your posts simply stop appearing to other people. You still see them on your own profile — everything looks normal to you — but real users in those subreddits never do.
So a creator with a low CQS can spend weeks posting every day, writing captions, replying to comments, and getting almost no views, with no idea why. The account feels alive from the inside and is nearly dead from the outside.
The rule to burn into memory
If your posts stop getting their usual views and no moderator messaged you, suspect CQS first — before you blame the time of day, the caption, or the photo. More karma and more posting will not fix a CQS problem; they can make it worse.
Reddit doesn't hand you a CQS readout, so you diagnose it the way a doctor reads a fever: by the signs.

That last one is the manual test: open your post in a private/incognito window, or ask a friend to look while logged out. If it's missing from the subreddit's new feed for everyone but you, you're being filtered.
The two-minute version

One honest limit
A shadowban check tells you whether the whole account is hidden site-wide. Low CQS can also cause softer, subreddit-by-subreddit filtering that a site-wide check won't catch. So treat a clean check as good news, not a guarantee — if views are still weak, the fix below is the same either way.
CQS moves for one reason: evidence that a real human uses this account for more than advertising. Everything on the left builds that evidence. Everything on the right is noise, or worse.

The account that looks most like a normal Reddit user — one with hobbies, opinions, and a sense of humour — is the one Reddit trusts to promote.
The best time to build CQS is before you post a single promotional photo. Give a new account 5–7 days of looking like a person. It's boring. It's also the difference between an account that works and one that's invisible from day one.

The trick is that this can't be faked with a script or a checklist you resent. Pick subreddits about things you'd read anyway — that's the whole point. If you genuinely like true crime, cosy games, or a football team, that's your warm-up material, and it'll read as real because it is.
If an established account went quiet, don't panic and don't torch it. You recover the same way you'd build it — just with more patience, because you're digging out of a hole rather than starting on flat ground.
When to walk away
Two permanent traps are worth knowing. Karma-farming history leaves a mark that doesn't wash out, and old accounts with a checkable creator history usually aren't worth reviving. If an account is deep in either hole, building a fresh one — properly, with a real warm-up week — is often faster than resurrecting the old one. The exception is an account carrying a large follower count worth saving.
Your account has 4,000 post karma. Overnight, posts stop appearing in three subreddits — no mod messages. What's the most likely cause, and does more karma fix it?
B. Silent disappearance across several subreddits with no mod message is the signature of a low CQS. Karma is a different thing entirely — only real participation lifts CQS. Confirm with the shadowban checker and then do the recovery routine.

B. Karma minimums get you allowed to post; CQS decides whether anyone sees it. A warm-up week of real activity builds the trust you're about to spend. Skipping it is why so many new accounts are invisible from day one.
